Refugee Crisis in San Antonio!
Due to federal funds being cut-off, dozens of Refugee families are in need!
As many of you have heard, the US Federal Government has frozen funding for many programs. One of the programs is for the legal resettlement of families to the United States from several different countries. In particular, Afghan families that assisted our troops and government in their country for many years that are now being persecuted and have been brought to our community are now in danger since the resettlement process has been cutoff from funding. Therefore, a family recently arriving in the last month has now lost case workers assisting in their new life in America.
Dozens of families were brought in in the midst of the funding cuts and are now at risk of not providing for their families of 6-10 people. Rent, job assistance, medical, and other basic needs and services are not available through their resettlement agency. In fact, just last Monday, February 10, dozens of families received eviction notices due to rent not being paid by their resettlement agency. Since then, many have been paid but all indications are that March rent payments will not be made due to lack of public funds.
Many of these recent arrivals do not have social security numbers, jobs, transportation and work authorizations that can then support their families also due to thus current situation. Our families do not know what tomorrow holds. We are called to welcome and love our neighbors! They are here amongst us from many nations and every recent arrival is at great risk of being put out on the street. Join us in our effort to avoid this crisis by coming alongside these precious families! Your prayers and/or funding is greatly appreciated! Thank you, from New Hope Connection, a 501c3 nonprofit in San Antonio.
Update: We know 30 or more families will need help covering April's rent. Several of these families have recently started to work providing for their household but will continue to face a shortfall until they get on their feet financially. New Hope Connection will continue to help as best as possible with the limited resources we have. Thank you for your generosity and continuing to keep these families in your prayers.
